How AI is used here

ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude helped create NewsOregon. AI assists with research, source organization, writing and site development. Original linked headlines retain their publishers’ wording. News collection now runs in ChatGPT Work’s cloud; no personal computer or open desktop app is needed.

How the news monitor works

A single ChatGPT Work schedule requests a cloud collection on the schedule below. NewsOregon’s checking scripts run in GitHub Actions and read a fixed list of Portland and Oregon news publishers and official school and election pages. It looks for recent articles on four topics: Portland Public Schools; Portland City Council Districts 3 and 4 and City Auditor; Multnomah County and Metro offices; and Oregon’s races for governor, labor commissioner and U.S. Senate.

It keeps news reporting that names those schools, offices or races. It leaves out opinion pieces, editorials, a newsroom’s own endorsements, sponsored content, ballot measures and legislative races. It copies each publisher’s headline, author, date and link exactly, writes no summaries and never rewrites a headline.

Before anything appears here, the site’s own code re-checks every link against the same rules. Collections publish automatically once those checks pass; no one reviews each run by hand. The publisher can also start a refresh by hand, which runs the same checking scripts and rules. The scripts collect headlines and attribution metadata without asking an AI model to rewrite or summarize them. When a publisher can’t be read, the page says so. The news feeds are in beta: coverage depends on what publishers make available, and some stories will be missed.

Schedule
Checks hourly around the clock through November 8, 2026, Portland time. This schedule ends on that date.
Coverage
Portland Public Schools; Portland city elections; Multnomah County and Metro elections; Oregon statewide offices.

These are the task’s requested settings. Its run records do not independently confirm which model and effort executed each check.

Feed pages show the last collection time in Portland time. Changes to official reference pages are labeled unverified notices, not confirmed news.

The home page shows up to two headlines within each existing section tab, with links to the full topic feeds. A combined reporting feed is also available. Publisher section pages supplement RSS; public article metadata can supply a missing original date or author. Some publishers require a subscription, and access can change after a story is collected.

Which news outlets we scan

The monitor attempts to check these 21 news outlets on the schedule above. Outlets are listed alphabetically, once each even when we check more than one of their feeds. This list follows the monitor’s current source configuration.

We read configured feeds and selected publisher indexes or news sitemaps, not every page on each website. A successful check does not mean we found every relevant story. The news feeds show the last collection time and any source failures.

We retain matching reporting for 21 days with original headlines, dates, author credits and source links. Opinion, editorials, publishers’ own endorsements and sponsored material are excluded. Inclusion is not endorsement.

Corrections and accountability

Automated briefings, resource assessments, linked reporting and opinion are different types of content and are labeled accordingly. Resource lists are curated, not ranked; viewpoint labels are editorial assessments, not accuracy scores. Read how to use the directories.
